Primary and high school students are a common sight in the temple when religion and ethics teachers around Finland take their classes on a field trip.
The visitors hear an introduction to the background, philosophy, practice and goal of bhakti-yoga, which then leads to an open conversation. Without exception, and often to the surprise of the teachers, the youth show interest in the Vedic conception of the soul and reality, and for most, it is the first time they perceive life beyond material, bodily designation. Many find the visit a thought provoking experience.
In addition to the standard programs, we also facilitate classroom activities that require hands on involvement in the cultural aspect of Krishna conscious lifestyle. Recently we hosted three dozens of third graders who learnt to play clay drums and brass cymbals; who created a rangoli or a symbolic pattern made of fresh flower petals; who studied traditional temple-dance; who got their faces decorated with colored clay; and who tasted lovingly prepared prasadam, sanctified food. It is not uncommon for the teachers to suggest a topic relevant to the curriculum around which we center the visit.
We organize programs for college and university students, too, and visit various educational institutions. All programs held in the temple are free of charge, except if a meal is included.
